Legacy Spotlight

“The Waiting Room Aquarium”
From the life overview of Frank N., 86, Santa Fe, NM. Shared with permission.

When my wife started physical therapy after her knee surgery, we spent a lot of time in a medical office that tried very hard to feel cheerful. There were framed prints of desert landscapes, a basket of outdated magazines, and, in the corner, a large aquarium that hummed steadily all day. The fish were bright and busy, a myriad of colors moving through the water with a confidence I envied during those uncertain weeks.

I sat in the same chair every visit, close enough to the tank that I could hear the soft bubbling. While my wife worked with her therapist behind a closed door, I watched the fish circle and dart, never colliding, never seeming to hurry. A small boy waiting with his mother would sometimes press his face to the glass, leaving faint smudges I knew someone would wipe away later. I didn’t mind them. They made the place feel used, alive.

One afternoon, after a particularly hard session, my wife came out tired but smiling. We sat together for a few minutes before leaving, watching a pale yellow fish glide slowly from one side of the tank to the other. “He’s not rushing,” she said. “Maybe that’s the trick.” I nodded, pretending it was something I’d already understood.

We didn’t talk much on the drive home that day, and we never discussed the fish again. The image, though, stayed with me: the steady water, the patient movement, the quiet insistence that healing didn’t need to be fast to be real.

How to Use Cloud Backup for Your Important Files

Cloud backup is a safe way to store copies of your important files—photos, documents, and records—online so they’re protected if your computer or phone is lost, damaged, or stops working. Once set up, it runs automatically in the background and requires very little attention.

Set Up Cloud Backup Once and Let It Run

To get started, choose a reliable cloud service and install it on your device. These well-established options are easy to use and work across computers and phones:

After creating an account, install the app and choose which folders to back up—Photos and Documents are usually the most important. The service will automatically copy your files to the cloud and keep them updated. Most services offer free storage, with paid plans available if you need more space.

Focus on backing up items that are difficult to replace, such as family photos, tax records, medical paperwork, and scanned documents. Programs and apps do not need to be backed up, as they can usually be reinstalled.

Add Extra Protection and Redundancy

For additional peace of mind, enable automatic syncing so new files are backed up immediately without manual steps. Turn on two-factor authentication to protect your account with a verification code sent to your phone—this feature is available on Google Drive, iCloud, and Dropbox.

Many people also use a second backup method, such as an external hard drive. A simple option is Western Digital My Passport. Keeping both a cloud backup and a physical backup ensures your files are protected even if one system fails.

Cloud backup works best when you rarely have to think about it. A quick monthly check to confirm files are syncing correctly is usually all the maintenance it needs.
