Knowing Who to Call — and When
One of the quieter forms of wisdom is knowing which person fits which moment. Over time, most people begin recognizing that different relationships serve different purposes. Some friends are calming in a crisis, others are ideal for practical advice, and some are simply the right person for a long, wandering conversation on an ordinary afternoon.
Some People Are Best for Practical Problems
Certain people naturally think in steps and solutions. They’re the person you call when you need help figuring something out:
how to handle paperwork
which tool to use for a repair
what questions to ask before making a decision
They tend to stay calm, organize information clearly, and focus on what can actually be done next.
Other People Are Better for Emotional Situations
Not every problem needs fixing immediately. Some people are better at listening than solving. They ask thoughtful questions, leave room for pauses, and don’t rush the conversation toward conclusions. Calling the right person during an emotional moment often matters more than the advice itself. The feeling of being understood can be more helpful than finding an immediate solution.
Some Friendships Are Built Around Shared Energy
There are also people you call simply because they reliably shift your mood. The friend who always notices something funny during a frustrating day. The person who makes errands more enjoyable or turns a short coffee into a conversation that lasts two hours. These relationships matter because they change how ordinary life feels.
Timing Matters Too
Even the right person may not be the right person for every moment. Some conversations are better had during a walk, a drive, or a quiet evening rather than in the middle of a rushed day. Knowing when to reach out — and when to wait until there’s proper space for the conversation — often changes how meaningful it becomes.
Experience Teaches Relationship Patterns
Over time, people begin understanding the emotional shape of their relationships. You learn who keeps confidences, who stays calm under pressure, who offers perspective without judgment, and who reliably follows through. These patterns become clearer through repeated experience.
Why This Matters
Strong relationships are rarely interchangeable. Knowing who to call — and when — reflects a deeper understanding of the different ways people support one another throughout life.

Leaving on the Porch Light for No One in Particular
From the life overview of James R., 78, Asheville, North Carolina. Shared with permission.
Most evenings, I keep the porch light on. It’s not because I expect anyone to arrive. I just like the feeling that the house remains slightly open to the possibility that someone might. It’s not a security measure in any strict sense, nor is it really necessary on our street, which is quiet enough that darkness would not be considered unusual or unsafe.
The habit began years ago when visits were more common. Friends would stop by without much planning, children would come and go at odd hours, and neighbors would appear with something to share or ask about. The light was a signal more than a utility, serving as a small acknowledgment that movement between houses was still a part of daily life.
As those visits became less frequent, the light remained.
At some point, I considered whether it should be turned off in the interest of practicality. I remember standing in the doorway once, my hand near the switch as I thought through the logic of it. Nothing depended on it anymore. No one was likely to interpret it as an invitation or an expectation.
And yet I left it on.
Over time, the habit stopped being about visitors altogether. It just became part of how the house feels at the end of the day—less sealed off, more gently present in the world outside it. When I see the light from the street, I feel a kind of continuity between inside and out, as though the boundary is still there but not entirely closed.
I don’t think of it as waiting anymore. It’s simply the way the evening looks when it’s finished.

The Role of Updates in Keeping Devices Secure
When your phone, tablet, or computer asks you to install an update, it's easy to click "Later." However, software updates do much more than add new features or change how things look. Many updates fix security problems that scammers and hackers can use to access devices and personal information.
Why Updates Matter
Technology companies regularly discover weaknesses in their software. If left unpatched, these vulnerabilities can make devices more susceptible to malware, scams, and data theft. Installing updates helps close those security gaps and keeps your information better protected.
In many cases, updates also improve performance, fix bugs, and make apps run more smoothly. That's why it's generally a good idea to install updates within a few days of receiving them.
You can learn more about updating your devices directly from Apple here and Microsoft here.
Make Updates Easier to Manage
Most modern devices can install updates automatically. Turning on automatic updates means you don't have to remember to check for them yourself.
Apple explains how to enable automatic updates for iPhones and iPads here, and Microsoft provides instructions for managing Windows updates here.
One exception is when an update notice appears unexpectedly while you're browsing the internet. Pop-up messages claiming your device is infected or urgently needs an update can sometimes be scams. Whenever possible, install updates through your device's Settings app or the official app store rather than by clicking random pop-up messages.
A few minutes spent updating your devices can help protect your personal information and reduce the risk of security problems later.
